Stephon Marbury announced that he wants another opportunity in the NBA, and while he probably won’t get it, it gives me the opportunity to say talk about something that has been on my mind about him that is somewhat controversial: Should Stephon Marbury should be in the Hall of Fame?
No, I’m not baiting or trolling here. Look at his career. In the NBA he was a 2 time all-star, and 2 time all-NBA 3rd team selection. He and Kevin Garnett are one of the great “what-if” scenarios in NBA history, and I place more of the blame on Garnett than I do Marbury for their break-up (and much more on the Timberwolves front office). After he was traded to the Nets, and until his career hit quicksand in New York, he averaged 22 PPG and 8.3 APG over a 5 season period.
I’ll agree, those aren’t enough to get into the HOF.
But what he did in China puts him over the top. In his first 4 seasons he posted averaged of 23 PPG, 25 PPG, 25 PPG, and 30 PPG. He is a 3 time CBA champion and a finals MVP. But what he did for Chinese Basketball (they put a statue up for him) goes far what is on his resume. He single-highhandedly elevated basketball in that country and made that league a destination for players on the fringe of the NBA.
If Yao Ming was elected to the Hall because of his impact to the game overseas, then Stephon Marbury should be in the Hall of Fame as well.
